Photo of the Week - March 24, 2014

On a whim we decided to head back up to the Monte Vista Wildlife Refuge in Colorado to see if any Sandhill cranes were still hanging around the area. We did see a few, but the thousands that were there just over a week back had all "flown the coop". What few birds that were left were a couple hundred Canadian Geese, lots of different types of ducks and a very persistent Cooper's Hawk that had a knack of flushing out all of the nesting birds in the reeds. It got quite comical watching him dive bomb an area and see all of the hidden birds come flying out of the reeds in all directions. This image is a flyby as he swooped down next to the road we were driving on.....with eyes peered downward for prey (I guess) and any possible annoyance he might be able to inflict.

Photo of the Week - March 17, 2014

The weather report a couple days back said that there was a chance of some snow around the Abiquiu & Ghost Ranch area. This winter throughout New Mexico has been extremely dry and warm and my other earlier efforts to get some winter snow images around Ghost Ranch had sent me back home empty handed. We took to the road with what I was thinking might be my last chance at some winter images this season. Coming over the hills east of El Rito I was excited to see a dusting of snow covering everything right down to the village itself. This image was one of the many I took in a round El Rito that morning. Not wanting to lose to much time and miss any possible snow at Ghost Ranch we got back on the road and headed south towards Abiquiu.  Needless to say, since this weeks image is not of some snow covered red rocks from Ghost Ranch I again went home empty handed.....with the exceptions of some nice images from El Rito.

Photo of the Week - March 10. 2014

Yesterday we drove east from Taos towards Cimarron. The plan was to look for some interesting fishing locals and to maybe end up  at the st. James Hotel for some lunch.....plans changed. There was nothing very interesting at Eagle Nest Lake or the creek down through Cimarron Canyon. Didn't make it to the St. James either. We eventually ended up at the Colfax Tavern (Cold Beer) for lunch and libation. Roger at the tavern told us to head out towards the Dawson Cemetery around dusk and he guaranteed we would see some elk. Driving over I saw nothing....driving back, WOW! I would venture a guess of a herd of between 600-800 elk. They didn't like having my 400 mm lens pointing at them either (gun shy I guess). We followed them along the road back towards Colfax for a good 2 miles giving me dozens of photo ops. The sun back lighting them most of the way.

Photo of the Week - March 3, 2014

Last week we were in Bisbee, Arizona for a few days. I was long overdue in delivering some new images to the Panterra Gallery. While there I scheduled enough time to take advantage of some new Arizona locations to photograph. This image is from Lowell, just southeast of Bisbee on the other side of the Lavender Pit Mine. It consists of a single street of old cars, Harley's and early 20th century store fronts. I don't know if this ever actually was a Greyhound bus stop, but the old sign and bus was a very appealing image.
