Flower Field Workers, Colorado, 2011 (click on image for larger version)

Last September, I spent the most wonderful day of photography with my great friends Geraint Smith, Pam Morgan and my wife Christie. We drove the back roads of southern Colorado between Costilla, New Mexico and Manassa, Colorado from near sun-up to past sunset. We shot everything from rusty farm equipment to a one-lane bridge spanning the Rio Grande River, and ending the day looking at the sunset produced blood red color of the Sangre de Cristos Mountains.
This image in particular reminds me of how good I felt that day. How fantastic it was to be doing something I so thoroughly loved, and how blessed I am to have these wonderful people in my life. In this picture, I see more than two farm hands working the crop under beautiful skies. I see, feel and remember the laughter we had that day. But most of all, I see the focus of what I will be doing for the remainder of my life.......Photography.

Saguaro Garden, Arizona, 2011

Our last trip back from Taos, we drove the southern route through Tuscon to San Diego. A large section of the freeway between Casa Grande and Gila Bend is flanked by stands of beautiful saguaro cactus. I have driven through this section of Arizona many, many times. Most times, in such a hurry to get to our final destination we never really stop and appreciate the majesty of these alien looking desert plants. This trip, I was in the 4x4, and found a hidden little road right off the freeway. We drove back a ways, found a shady spot and just sat and looked for a while...thoroughly enjoying the secret place I had happened upon.

This image is one of a few I shot that day. Not many clouds. Bright blue sky. A wonderful warm desert day in November, with great afternoon light highlighting the defense system of the giant saguaro.

Cherry Creek Hotel & Saloon, New Mexico, 2011

This last weekend, my wife and I watched the movie "Cowboys and Aliens" for the first time. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It was also a blast to watch because I had taught a couple workshops at the movie ranch where the first and last parts of the movie had been filmed. During the first scenes where Daniel Craig's character came riding into town, I was telling my wife........"I know right where that is"........"I have pictures of that street scene", etc. I'm sure I was starting to get a little annoying to her after a while.

Anyway, above is one of my images of the front of the main saloon that was prominent in the movie, and below is a shot by one of our students, Brad Stamm, of the group at the movie ranch this last summer.

Moonset over the Pier, CA, 2012

Last Monday, was the first full moon for 2012, and it was spectacular. I hope that this is a sign of things to come!! This image was a 2 second exposure that gave me the clarity of the moon that I was looking for together with enough blurring of the surf to not distract the viewers eye. I also love the color in the sky....enough to actually not post a black and white version even though this was suppose to be a Black & White image this week. This was taken in Oceanside, CA, near my home. Hope you enjoy.

Sunset at the Bosque, New Mexico, 2011

On our way back to California last month, we decided to take the southern route through Deming, Tucson and Yuma to avoid a big storm that was dumping a ton of snow on I-40. Along the way, I got a call from my friend Geraint, checking how far down the road we had gone. Being near Socorro he suggested we take some time to go see the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. I thought we might be there an hour or so, and didn't mind taking a little time to pull the camera out anyway. Well.....3 1/2 hours later and the sun setting, I had taken 530 images and was amazed at seeing tens of thousands of birds. Quite the site. I wish I could have stayed longer.

This image was taken from the "Flight Deck" pier. It was cold and I was the only one out on the pier in a t-shirt and a lens under 500mm in size. I guess you could say I looked like a "bird out of water"....HA! It was the time most of the Sandhill Cranes were coming back for the evening. They looked like airplanes coming in for landing. Pretty cool! This image shows a couple of the cranes just about to hit the water, and the sunset colors were spectacular. Hope you like the image.

Old Dining Car Sign, California, 2011

Happy New Year everyone. I wish you all a happy and prosperous 2012.

About a month ago, on our way back from a few days up in Monterey, Carmel and Big Sur, we drove by a very run down old cafe next to the highway. The original builders had decided to incorporate two old trolley cars as book ends to the main portion of the building. It obviously hadn't been used in decades for any kind of a going business..........just the kind of thing I love to take pictures of!!!!

This image is of the old neon sign that sits on top of the roof of the cafe. The printing on the sign is very faded and is kind of hard to see, but the sign reads "Cafe - Dining Cars". Some of the old neon tubes were still there, and I imagine that back in the 1950's this sign "Glowed" at night, since there really wasn't anything else near it.

Stations of the Cross Shrine, San Luis, Colorado, 2011

This weeks image was taken last April on one of our many trips through southeastern Colorado. It is a little over an hours drive north of Taos. The shrine was dedicated in 1990. Even though it is only 21 years old, it gives the impression of being much older. Being constructed right above the town of San Luis, and on the tallest point in the community, gives it a striking presence when you first drive into town. The green land you see behind the shrine is all the farmland surrounding San Luis.

McWay Falls, Big Sur, California, 2011

It's been a couple of weeks since I posted a new Photo of the Week. It has been a very busy couple of weeks. So I am finally back at it, and I hope you will like the new image.

This weeks image is of McWay Falls, just south of Big Sur, CA, in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. By the time I got to the spot where I took this shot, the sun was pretty much a thing of the past. Since the drive and the hike were very time consuming, I wasn't going to leave without a picture of this beautiful place. This image is a 30 second exposure which I think really added to the image, giving it a mystical feeling.

Blond Horse, New Mexico 2010

While driving through the Valle Vidal in northern New Mexico last year, I came across a couple of beautiful Palomino horses in a corral out in the middle of nowhere. This one was the friendliest of the two, and loved posing for the camera. After about 2o minutes, a group of 8-9 riders all in dusters and rain gear came up from the valley from a days ride. It was then that I realized that the corral was used to store horses while others were out riding in the area. Beautiful horse and an even more beautiful area.

Grafton Road Tree, Utah, 2011

I broke out my old Olympus camera that I had converted to infrared a fews years back for use on my recent trip over to Zion/St. George last month. This was a shot along the road to the ghost town of Grafton Utah. The leaves of the trees were starting to turn a nice yellow anyway, but the infrared sensor really adds a surreal contrast to the image.

Full Moon Rising, Ouray, CO, 2011

Last Septemeber, Chris and I drove from Taos up to Durango and then Ouray Colorado. We had a reservation at a small motel in Ouray that evening. Luckily, we got an end room, with a view window looking towards the mountains to the east. Sitting there looking through the window that evening, I noticed a "Glow" coming from behind the mountains. Within a few minutes, I had my camera setup and ready for the moon rise. This is a shot as it was just finishing coming up behind the ridge. Lucky Me!!!!

Hanging Skull, Galisteo, NM, 2011

New Mexico is pretty famous for cow skulls, at least from my perspective. I see them everywhere, but almost always attached to the side of a building, a barn, sticking to the top of a fence post, or in this case hanging from the entry gate to a ranch. Rarely if ever do I see one still attached to the rest of the skeleton........laying in a field.....next to a road. It is almost as though they lived and existed to eventually become yard art.

Zion National Park, Utah, 2011

Last week I was in St. George, Utah and Zion National Park, with my good friend and business partner, Craig Varjabedian. We were there doing a pre-shoot for a new photo tour and workshop to be offered through Eloquent Light Photography Workshops for next year. This week's image was taken from one of the most photographed locations in the park, looking down the Virgin River around sunset. We are planning on scheduling next year's workshop around the change of color in the area. As you can see, some of the trees in this image were just starting to turn.

Road G Bridge, Rio Grande River - Colorado, 2011

Yes, a one lane wooden bottom bridge. The dirt road to get here is through miles of open valley land in the San Luis Valley in Colorado. Once there, you will drive miles of open dirt road to get to "nowhere" on the other side. Surprisingly, there are cars that you do come across out here. The crossing is over the Rio Grande River, miles upstream of the start of the gorge section that runs west of Taos. I love going here. It is a beautiful and quiet place. The reflections of the sky and surrounding landscape on the slow moving waters are gorgeous.

Downtown Rico, Colorado, 2011

Last September, we drove up to Durango and then Ouray, Colorado for a pickup at a gallery in Durango and to celebrate my birthday. The day's drive from Taos was wonderful. The color hadn't started changing in the trees yet, but it was definitely starting to feel like fall weather. When I was a kid, and again when Chris and I were first married, I had been to Ouray, and had driven the "Million Dollar Highway" from Silverton (check out the link to a You Tube video). I guess the memories of that road had somehow been suppressed, because this time, it FREAKED me out!!! A couple sections of the road seemed they were barely hanging onto the side of the vertical cliff, and it looked like it was 300-400 feet straight down from the side of the road, which only had a white strip as a barrier!!!

Anyway, there was no way I was going to be driving back on that road, so we had to find another way back to Taos. We ended up driving quite a few hours extra, heading down towards Telluride, then towards Delores and Mancos. Because of this extra driving, we came to Rico, Colorado. A beautiful little mountain town, unfortunately obviously having some economic problems. These buildings just grabbed my eye. The blue and orange colors, with the green of the hills behind......I just loved the look.

All-in-all, the extra driving was worth it, because of the new places we visited, and all of the images from the route back. Just a wonderful day.

Tipi's at Sunset, Taos, NM, 2011

This image was from the last evening we were in Taos about 3 weeks ago. The sunset was not overly spectacular, but the color of the sky seemed richer than normal. I know I have taken a lot of Tipi images in the past, I know...I know!!! But images of these tipi's, and in particular.....the Taos area, just overwhelm both myself & Chris. I look at this image and the feeling I had standing there......... looking out over the west gorge mesa....with the sunset, and all of the regret I was feeling at that time about having to leave that beautiful place again....all strongly come back to me!!! I hope you enjoy the image, and maybe feel some of the same energy that I feel when looking at it.

Old Dodge, New Mexico, 2011

Another shot from our "Photo Safari" through the San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado a few weeks back. This was taken on the Harold Anderson farm in Jaroso. I met Harold and his wife Kathy over a year ago on a similar drive through the area. They are a couple of the nicest people you will ever meet. This time into town I was with friends, Geraint, Pam and my wife Christie. Since we were traveling with females - bathroom stops were a little more frequent - Pam is good in nature, but Chris is another story. While stopping in to see Kathy and let her know that we were in town to shoot the barn and silo area, Chris asked to use the restroom. Kathy is the Post Mistress for USPS in Jaroso, and can't let people use the post office facility, but did tell us that some friends of hers, right down the dirt road had a "Very Nice" outhouse they let people use. You need to know that Chris is not an "outhouse" girl, so needless to say, she was a little hesitant, but need overcame both approaching strangers and using an outside toilet. So, we bravely headed down the road toward our uncertain fate. Once there, we met more wonderful people of Jaroso, artist/sculpter Lynn Kircher and his daughter. Luckily, Chris was able use the "Inside" toilet, and in doing so was able to see Lynn's studio, which turned out to be the studio of her dreams (she's an oil painter)........half hour later after lots of very enjoyable and informative conversation with Lynn, we were able to head over and focus on photography. This truck is from the Anderson's grave yard of old vehicles, tractors and farm implements.

Manassa Farm, Colorado, 2011

This was one of the many stops on a "Photo Safari" a couple of weeks back into the San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado. The closest town to this spot is Manassa, home of boxer Jack Dempsey, and buggy full of Amish farmers. I imagine this is an Amish farm because it is immaculately cared for. This shot was taken near the end of the day, with the sunlight skimming across the grass of the hayfields. Everything around us was turning a beautiful golden color. Thanks to Chris, Pam & Geraint for the unforgettable time.

New Mexico Tractorman, La Madera, NM, 2011

Another "Photo Safari Day", west of Taos, NM. Found some back roads through an area between El Rito and Tres Peidras. Saw this road sign and the wild sunflowers (I know they have another name, but it slips me right now), and just had to take this shot of what looks like a State of New Mexico advertisement image. The "Tractorman" graphic on the sign has always cracked me up too. Looks like the farmer has a tractor for legs.......I know, I'm weird like that!!!!

Llano San Juan, New Mexico - Photo Safari

Llano San Juan Donkey, New Mexico, 2011

One of my greatest joys in life is to take off for the day on “Photo Safari”…….never really knowing where I might wind up or what I’ll see or discover. Last week we arrived in northern New Mexico for an extended stay and I immediately started planning which days I would be able to go lose myself in the hills around Taos. The day of this picture was a little overcast and kind of drizzly, with patches of clouds and every once in a while a major down pour of rain…….but as the saying goes…………. “A Bad Day of Photography is always better than a Good Day at the Office”.

Driving out east of Penasco in the valley area of Llano San Juan, I headed out to a spot I thought might photograph well on an overcast day. Well, it just wasn’t working for me, besides constantly trying to keep my camera and myself dry. Being kind of stubborn anyway, I tried driving around some other back roads in hopes of finding that one elusive brilliant opening of light on a spectacular meadow or church building………nothing until I drove by this old farm and make shift barn. The donkey was probably the smartest of the two of us this day. He at least was staying out of the rain. Luckily, there wasn’t any traffic on the road, so I threw it in park, rolled down the side window and shot this from inside the truck. If you look close, you can see the rain coming down around the dark area around the donkey. Ten seconds after this shot, the donkey decided I wasn’t that intersting any more, and turn inside and disappeared.

As “Photo Safari’s” go, this was a slow and not to productive session, but the time out cruising the High Road area was still time worth spending. Hope you also try to find time to go on your own Safari.

Old Ford Truck, Mora, New Mexico, 2011

Isn't this a cool old truck!!! A good friend of mine & fellow photographer, Geraint Smith shot this truck quite a few years back, and I had always like the image. Last Friday, Chris & I were out on "Photo Safari" around the area, and drove right by this truck......I slammed on the brakes and both of us simultaneously said....."That's Geraint's Truck"!!!! Anyway, here is my attempt at the same image........sorry Geraint for copying, but I do love that old image of yours.

Well, we are finally back in Taos. Our drive from Albuquerque up to Taos was like driving through a 4th of July fireworks show. The lightning was a distance off of both sides of the road, with both of us simultaneously saying for most of the drive....."Wow...did you see that one "!!!!

The storms hung around most of the next day, giving me some great sky's to shoot. This one is from south of Taos near the hiking trail to the gorge rim. I was shooting the sunset to the southwest in hopes of something spectacular happening.... for about 20 minutes....nothing. Then I turned around towards Taos Mountain to see how the dark clouds were looking around the mountain, and there was this old tree. Working my way around the tree with a few different angle shots, I finally just stopped......tried to get out of my Southern California mind and experience the world I was physically standing in. This was the image that I opened my eyes up too. I like it......and will use this image as my spring board for the duration of my month long stay in New Mexico. Hope you like it too.

After a few weeks of Black & White images for my "Photo of the Week", I thought I would show you some of that beautiful New Mexico color. This was taken last fall in Pilar, south of Taos, along the Rio Grande River (in fact right on top of the river). The red willows in the sand bar against the blue of the river and sky are fantastic...don't you think!!! Hope you enjoy seeing the picture as much as I had in being there and taking.

The Very Large Array on the San Agustin plains, 50 miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. These 27 radio antennas are constructed into a "Y" shape and are considered the world premier astronomical radio observatory. Each antenna is 82 feet in diameter. The area is open to visitors and they allow you to walk right out under the structures. This image was taken in September 2010. The 1997 movie "Contact" with Jodie Foster, Matthew McConaughey & Tom Skerritt was filmed here.

This weeks image was taken south of Santa Fe, New Mexico last summer, at the Eaves Movie Ranch. We had taken a group of students there that were attending a week long workshop with Eloquent Light. The storm clouds in this image are nothing compared to the ones behind me. Within a few minutes of this shot, the heavens opened up on us, as we ran to take shelter in the old saloon building on the set. Wonderful place to shoot if any of you might be interested in the future.

Open Shutter Gallery's Juried Exhibition: "Exposure"

I am excited to announce that both of my entries for the juried photo exhibition "Exposure"at Durango Colorado's "Open Shutter Gallery" were selected into the August 12th through September 7th show. My black & white images titled "Abiquiu Morada" and "Taos Tipi", are both being included in the competition portion of the exhibition. According to the email notice, works were submitted from worldwide, from as far away as Thailand and Madagascar. Below are both of the images submitted.

1941 Kansas City Monarchs Negro League team

Going through some of my old sport collection and ran across this team picture of the Kansas City Monarchs of the old Negro American League from 1941. Far right is Satchel Paige, Hall of Fame pitcher. One of his quotes: "Age is a question of mind over matter......if you don't mind, it doesn't matter".

Taken at the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum in Vista, CA. There are 55 acres of old tractors, steam engines machines, trucks, wagons, farm equipment, and just about anything related to the old mechanized world of the early to mid 20th century. The above image was taken in one of the many building on the property. This is a working blacksmith area that I thought screamed Black & White.

Taos Tipi, New Mexico, 2010

This image was taken early evening in July 2010, during one of Northern New Mexico's monsoon storms. There was just enough sunlight left to add some light to the tipi and the tops of some of the bushes around the area. Kolob Cabin, Zion National Park, Utah - 2008

This image was taken in a less traveled area of Zion National Park in Utah. It's located along the road going back to Kolob Reservior, and was taken around Thanksgiving in 2008. The entire higher area of Zion looks very similar to this photo......lots of aspen trees. Early fall would be a wonderful time to see the change of color. I was going through some of my older images looking for shots around the St George area in setting up a possible 2012 workshop through Eloquent Light. We are contemplating expanding the workshops out of New Mexico, and this is one area we are looking in to. If you have any interest in this future workshop, let me know. Mission Gate - San Luis Rey

This image was taken at the Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside. It is the entrance into the cemetery area to the east of the main chapel. A Franciscan Church, know as the "King of the Missions", it is the largest of the California Missions. The buildings on the grounds date back to 1798, and is in constant use today. Clint's Ranch, Santa Fe, New Mexico (2010)

This was shot last summer at a beautiful horse ranch south of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Every summer, New Mexico has a monsoon season. The rains, thunder and lightning can all get pretty nasty, but the skies during that time are spectacular. Thought this image would be appropriate, since it was shot during one of the Eloquent Light Photography Workshops last year, that I am now a partner in the company.

"3 Cottages and the Moon"

This image was taken after sunset on The Strand in North Oceanside, CA. I had timed the full moon rising and I had been waiting down the road for a more direct shot of the entire row of the Robert's Cottages (see blog dated: March 21, 2011). Glancing over my shoulder, I eventually saw the moon sneaking up through a couple of the buildings higher up on the bluff. I quickly ran down to this shot. The street light, and the light clouds slightly obscuring the moon, give a nice feel to the scene.

This weeks image was shot last November west of Paso Robles, California. The entire area around this central California valley is covered with fantastic wineries and vineyards. Late fall is a great time to see the leaves change these great fall colors. This mid morning shot was taken in between two rain storms, which made for the great cloud cover. View towards Cerro Pedernal from the top of the horseshoe on the main road south of Taos. This tree is arguably one of the most photographed and painted trees in the Taos area. The graphics and the lettering on this building are great. This is "SO" Route 66........ 1960's. Joe & Aggie's restaurant is in Holbrook, Arizona, right on the original old US Highway 66. I cannot attest to how good the food is, but based on the dated facade and the amount of cars that were in the parking lot, my guess is they are still in business for a reason.

This weeks image is from the El Rancho de las Golondrinas, a 200 acre living history museum, southwest of Santa Fe, New Mexico. This building is know as "Big Mill from Sapello", and was originally used as a molasses mill. The original rancho buildings were used as a resting stop on the original El Camino Real from Mexico City to Santa Fe. I have had many trips out to this place, and would recommend it highly to anyone visiting the Santa Fe area.

This picture is from October 2008. We were heading back to California from Taos, through Tucson. It was getting kind of late in the afternoon, knowing we still had 6+ hours of driving left to get back home. Thought I might be able to squeeze a few sunset shots in of the San Xavier de Bac Mission, southwest of Tucson. The light was wonderful, and very few people around. I was near the far east end of the church compound when I thought I would look back to wave and check that Chris was doing okay in the car. She had been setting in the car while I was strolling around the area taking pictures. Seeing that she was out of the car, using her own camera in between jestering towards the east, I couldn't figure out was going on. I started walking towards her, looking over my shoulder every few steps, until I finally saw what she was being so animated about. Could not have asked for a more beautiful moon rise, and in such a wonderful spot. Take a look at my Photo of the Week image at:

A couple of month's back, a storm had just finished dumping a ton of rain around our home in Oceanside. As soon as I could, I headed over to the pier to see what the sunset and storm clouds would give me to shoot. I was amazed to find so many other people out and around after such a storm. The globes to all of the lights were glowing from the sunset. They were not turned on yet. Hope you like the shot. A photo I took last summer in Taos. This old adobe church is one of the most photographed and painted churches in the country. Ansel Adams, Paul Strand and Georgia O'Keeffe are three of the more prominent artist's to use this building in their work. The church construction started in 1772, and was eventually finished in the early 1800's. It is a National Landmark Structure and a World Heritage Church, and is a place I will never tire of photographing. Meet Harley, a female Bull mastiff. This picture is from a trip last summer to a ranch south of Santa Fe, NM. Thought the saddle and hitching post went well with a dog the size of a small horse. Harley is a very friendly dog, always with head at petting level (which was above my waist, and I'm 6'2")........but with one major problem....slobber!!!

Robert's Cottages on The Strand in Oceanside. These were built in 1928, and are right on the beach in North Oceanside. This image was taken just after sunset, but with enough light to still reflect off of the front of the units. This is one of my images from my "Oceanside-The Dark Side" series, a collection of images taken with very little or no help from the sun.

2nd Annual Earth Through a Lens Exhibition-Palm Springs

The web site showing all of the winners and finalists for this exhibition is now available for viewing. Check out the Earth Through a Lens website for all of the categories and finalists images. The images are also hanging at two locations in the Palm Springs area. From March 15th through April 30th at the Rancho Mirage Library, and from April 4th through April 30th at the Hyatt Regency Suites Hotel in Palm Springs. The opening reception will be on April 4th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Hyatt Regency Suites Hotel. Below is my image "Lonely Oak" that was one of the finalists.

My image was one of the eight in the Deforestation category, and one of only 45 selected to be exhibited from the 100's of images submitted national for the contest. The jury consisted of:

Earth Day-"Earth Through a Lens" Juried Exhibition

Last Wednesday I received notice that my image "Lonely Oak" had been chosen to be included within this years "Earth Through a Lens" exhibition. The April exhibition will be held in Palm Springs with digital images be displayed in a show catalogue and at the California Museum of Photography. This show is a national juried photographic display held annually in the Palm Springs area to commemorate Earth Day.

Burger Run Car Show, Vista Ca

Went to a car show near Pepper Tree Drive-in in Vista, CA this morning. Last year they reported that over 550 cars were there. I would guess at least that many today. All makes and models......... from 1927 T Roadsters to 1970's Muscle Cars. Lots of 1955-57 Bel-Air's and Nomads. Even saw a chopped Fiat Roadster with flames. Who would have thunk it!!!! Tons of chrome & pinstripes. Many amazing looking vehicles.

Woodbridge Sandhill Crane Preserve, Lodi, CA

Chris and I just got back from a quick drive up to Lodi & Sacramento. We had some time yesterday (rain & all) to drive out to a Sandhill Crane wildlife preserve near Lodi, CA. Kind of a crummy day weather wise for humans but the birds didn't seem to mind. We were the only people out there for a couple hours, which was pretty cool! We drove the full length of Woodbridge Road probably 3-4 miles. Most of these shots are from the inside of a dry car, many times stopping in the middle of the road whenever a bird availed itself. There were Sandhill Cranes, Tundra Swans, Snowy White Egrets and Canadian Geese. Here are a few pictures of some of the birds and of the area to give you the feel of the fog and general dreariness of the day.

Mission San Juan Bautista

These are a few pictures I took at the California Mission San Juan Bautista last weekend, south of San Jose. Just playing around with some different black & white effects on these. The inside of the chapel is spectacular. The fresco painting of the walls was some of the best I have ever seen. Took these pictures with my handheld G10. Will go back with my 5D and a tripod next time for some longer exposure shots.

Chris & I went up to Stockton for the opening of the Altered Landscapes show at the L.H. Horton Jr. Gallery. My image of the Ranchos Church at Night was prominently displayed along with 17 other photographers from around the United States. It was a great show, and the Gallery Director, Jan Marlese was so much fun to finally meet in person.

The day after the show, we went up to the South Bay area, then down to Paso Robles. Most of Friday was a very drab and gray. misty day. Did break out the camera's for a few shots. Took a night shot of a cool looking McDonald's in Lodi, the evening after the show.

The Saturday morning is Paso Robles was beautiful. The roads were just drying out, and some blue skies were finding their way through the clouds. Took a fantastic drive over to Highway 1, through some of the wine area west of Paso Robles. Then down to Morro Bay. Stayed as long as we could before having to head back to Oceanside.

Western Ranch Life in New Mexico

This last year brought me to some wonderful "Old West" locales in Northern New Mexico. These 8 Black & White images (of the hundreds I took) were all shot within a couple miles of each other, over a 3 month span. Some were from a small ranch in San Marcos, south of Santa Fe, others from the humongous back pastures of the San Cristobal Ranch, and the rest from the Eaves Movie Set Ranch also in San Marcos. I was not alone in these travels, and many of my companions made these trips all the more memorable. I remember one day standing with Craig & Connie in the middle of a roping arena, with cattle, branding & roping all around us, while it "poured" rain for a good 20 minutes, drenching the three of us, and couldn't have thought of a more wonderful place to be. Another time looking at the face of Alexsandra (from Poland, and the first time in the US) looking with amazement at the Old Time Western town of Eaves Movie Ranch. I could feel her excitement in being in this strange wonderful place. These images are more than just interesting subject matter to me, they are a recording of moments in a very wonderful part of my life. If I convey any of those emotion to you as you view these images, then I have succeeded in my craft. I hope you all enjoy.............

Here is the new link to the web site advertising the month long show in Stockton at the L.H. Horton Jr. Gallery at the Delta Center for the Arts. The opening night reception is on Thursday, Novemeber 18th. I believe it starts around 7 pm that evening. Would love to see any of my friends that evening that are in the Stockton area.

L.H.Horton Jr. Gallery Exhibition acceptance

Was recently notified that my photograph of the Ranchos Church at Night has been accepted into the Photography 2010: Contrasting Landscapes Exhibition at the LH Horton Jr Gallery at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, CA. It will be one of only 34 images included within the month long exhibition. Carol McCusker, Curator of Photography at the Museum of Photographic Arts (MoPA) in San Diego, was the judge and I feel extremely honored to have an image included in this prestigious show.
Exhibition dates are November 18 – December 16, 2010

Hello All,

Spent part of yesterday and most of today updating my photography web page (http://www.stevenbundy.com/). I've added 4 new portfolio's and yes.........one is even a color section (shock of shocks), totaling over 60 new images!!!! Included are many images from my last time over in New Mexico (last July). Some of that work includes outdoor portrait work I did with Craig Varjabedian around Santa Fe, of which I had not done much of in the past. Check out both the Black & White and Color versions. I am happy with the out come of this new work. I have included a few images from my day long trek with Geraint Smith and Teresa Tamura, up into southeastern Colorado and the Valle Vidal nature preserve. That was a wonderful day of photography. Geraint even got his "Bear" shot!!! Thank you to you both for such an enjoyable time.

I assisted Craig Varjabedian in his Eloquent Light Workshop titled "Ranchers, Ramblers & Renegades". Great time with the seven students, the other assistant Patti Zolnick, and Craig.

The 6 days included morning class time along with afternoon/evening photographing of Cliff the Mountain man, Anthony the Powwow Dancer, Quarter Horses at the San Cristobal Ranch, together with a group of cowboys, cowgirls, ropers, and Healers & Headers that all made the week fly by. Taos News insert "Tempo" full page ad

Chris & I receive our copy here in Oceanside of The Taos News weekly paper about a week after it actually comes out in Taos. One of our favorite sections to read, is the "Tempo" Arts and Entertainment section of the paper. This week, for some reason, I hadn't perused that section until a couple of nights ago. Flipping through, I was startled to see a very familiar picture. A full page ad for the Enchanted Homes magazine (see previous post). Even though many of you have already seen this image previously, it is surprisingly great fun to be turning a page to see your own image in print, without knowing it was going to be there.

Oceanside Harbor Sunday fog

Last Sunday, work up early to a fog horn from the nearby harbor. Threw on some clothes and headed down to the water. Not many people were up around this early on a Sunday morning, so it was fun to walk around the area without the normal crowds that this place attracts. Have a few images that came out well from the time there, but this one seems to be one of my favorites. Eloquent Light Photography Workshops 2010

Eloquent Light Photography Workshops have announced the 2010 workshop schedule. The classes run from March through November and offer students a varied photographic experience in all four seasons of the area around Santa Fe, New Mexico. Included in the updated web site is a listing of the staff of which I am now included. I want to thank both Craig & Cindy for this great opportunity. I also hope some of the readers of this blog will find some time this coming year to experience the beauty of New Mexico and include a week long photography workshop with Craig and the other staff of Eloquent Light.

Taos News-Enchanted Homes Magazine "Final Foto" picture

Just received our copy of The Taos News bi-monthly newspaper insert "Enchanted Homes" for the months of February-March 2010. In every issue the back of the magazine has a page (page 70 in this issue) featuring a "Final Foto". This month's photo is one of mine - "Cold Drinks at Sugar's." Panterra Gallery- New Representation in Arizona

Just before Thanksgiving I met with Chuck Feil of the Panterra Gallery in Bisbee Arizona to discuss my photography portfolio. It was a great meeting - Chuck and I instantly hit it off. Great guy, with a fantastic, classy art gallery! I'm very happy to announce that my work is now hanging in his upscale gallery, along side many varied and talented artists.

Chuck along with Maralyce Ferree own the gallery - Maragni is the gallery manager, she's very knowlegable and always happy to help. Chuck is a photographer too, with an interesting background. He's traveled the world and has published 11 books of his work. Jane Goodall sought him out to make wildlife films on the Serengeti Plains of East Africa. Maralyce is a clothing designer from New York - her creative designs can also be seen at the gallery.

If you haven't visited Bisbee before (southeast of Tucson) it's an interesting historic town full of great restaurants, boutique hotels, galleries and shops - a perfect weekend get-away destination. Of course you should definately stop in at Panterra Gallery.

New Mexico Magazine 9th Annual Photo Contest-WINNER

Recently I was notified that one of my images, "Taos Teepee," received an Honorable Mention in the "Landmark" category of the New Mexico Magazine 9th Annual Photography Contest. It will be published in the January 2010 edition (Volumn 88, Issue 1). Approximately 1500 images were submitted by 357 photographers from New Mexico plus 35 other states and 3 foreign countries. I am both excited and honored to have been chosen from so many entries and look forward to seeing the magazine next month.

Perfect Frame & Gallery Solo Exhibition-Coming Soon in November

Starting on November 2nd, I will have a showing of my southwest images through the month of November at The Perfect Frame & Gallery in Carlsbad, California. The gallery owner, Robert, was cutting my mattes for my last show in September. I brought a couple of the finished framed images into show him the final product, and he immediately asked if I was available to show my work this November. Fun how things work out in life!!!
I will be showing some of my previous images from the September show, along with quite a few newer framed images. I will be bringing along a few larger prints that turned out spectacular!! Also have some smaller framed images that will be new to the collection.
On Friday, November 6th from 5pm to 8pm, Robert is putting together an artist reception party. You are all invited, but if you can, I ask that you let me know how many from your group will be showing up. Robert is having a local gourmet market & deli prepare the food for the party, and needs a rough estimate of how many will be showing up. There will be food and drink for all. I know he is trying to set up a music group also, but have not heard if that is a sure thing.

Amoung some of the other happenings since my last update are:

1.Third Place ribbon for Black & White at the 14th Annual NCPS Membership Exhibition.
2.Finalist for the New Mexico Magazine 9th Annual Photo Contest.

Fantastic Show-Thank you to all!

The show on Saturday was a HUGE success and fantastically attended. We estimated that between 150-200 people come to the event throughout the evening. Thank you to everyone that came by to see me and enjoy my images. Hard to believe that there were still a few bottles of wine & champagne left.

There are going to be quite a few new owners of some Bundy prints as well. Above, I've attached a picture of one of the three walls from the show. It's always a fantastic feeling to have someone appreciate your work so much to want to hang it on their walls. A special thank you to those of you who purchased not only some prints but the book from the show as well. I'll be getting in touch with you all this next week about delivery coordination.

The amount of planning for the event was daunting. Without the help and hard work of the three individuals above, this show would not have happened. From left to right, Gail Stram, Dee Holloway, and Ron Holloway, took large blocks of time out of their personal lives, to not only pull off a great party for my exhibition, but the promotional exposure it brought to the Alta Vista Gardens, who sponsored the whole event. Thank you to "The Kitchen Crew"!!! There was no way this could have been pulled off without you guys.

Now that I have pulled my self back down out of the clouds, its back to real life.........but boy, it was one hell of a ride!!! Thank you all!!

Today's the Day-First Solo Exhibition

The day has finally arrived. I'm both nervous & excited about my first Solo Exhibition. Finally finished all of the images & frames for the show, now it just needs to be installed. Amazing the amount of work and planning that goes into something of this size. Hard to imagine Craig's efforts for his show last month in New Mexico, together with putting together a book on the same subject, at the same time. Hats off to you my friend.

Well, those of you who are going to be able to come to the show, thank you in advance! I'm looking forward to tonight. I think it's going to be a lot of fun. Those from the Alta Vista Gardens, that were instrumental in setting this show up, a BIG thank you to all of you guys.

Workshop was a Blast, Plus 4 New Friends

It's been a few weeks since I finished my week long workshop, assisting Craig Varjabedian at the Eloquent Light Photography Workshop. I have been VERY busy getting ready for my upcoming September show at the Alta Vista Gardens, but more on that in my next post.

Our last day for the workshop was on a Friday (July 31st). The group we had for the week consisted of 4 students (Chris, Patty, Victoria & Jim). I do not think any of them had participated in a workshop format before, so all four of them seemed a little unsure of what to expect during the week, as did I since this was my first time as an assistant. Victoria & Patty were friends, and had been shooting locally together many times before hand. Both of them along with Jim were all from the Santa Fe area, so it was pretty easy for them to get to and from the studio from their homes. Chris came from Washington DC. She was the only one that had traveled any distance to get to the workshop.

All four were extremely eager to learn, with tons of questions, and Craig obliged them all with his years of experience and patience.

The first day after the morning classroom time, we all went to Rancho de los Golandrinas, outside of Santa Fe. The start of our time with the students, was helping them get familiar with the use of their equipment, and applying some of the ideas from the classroom time. Initially, it took them all a little time, but within the first couple of hours, everyone was really getting into the shoot. The biggest issues with the students seemed to be some of their faulty equipment, in particular their tripods. This issue was resolved later on in the week through Craig loaning out some better legs for the one's having the trouble. I think after the use of the new tripods for a while, the wallets of a couple of the students became a little lighter, but their enjoyment of the shoots was a lot greater.

The second day was first heading out north of Albuquerque for a private tour of a area of Petrogryph National Monument. It was a short time in the field, due to the heat, and not great light, but a knowledgeable good time was had by all. From the hike, we drove down to Albuquerque Museum of Art & History to see Craig's current exhibit "Ghost Ranch and the Faraway Nearby". http://www.cabq.gov/museum/CraigVarjabedianPhotographs.html

It was fun to have a private tour from Craig, and hear his stories of each of the images.

The third day was heading out to Bonanza Creek Ranch http://www.bonanzacreekranch.com/

This day Craig & I each took aside one of the students to give them more of a "one-on-one private approach" to the teaching. I think it really helped them both. By days end, both of them had taken dozens of GREAT images, and the other two had improved by leaps & bounds. I was very proud of all four of them, and the strides they had taken in just a couple of days.

Day Four, was then up the Chimayo Church and to a hidden Morada that Craig had taken pictures of in his book "En Divina Luz" called Cruciform Morada from 1990. It was always one of his pictures that I loved, and now I was going to get a chance to make my own image. Besides the attack dog that came after us, & the approaching storm (that caused the "Assistant" to do some extra hiking to track down a couple wandering students) it was a GREAT shoot. I think all of us came away with many great shots.

Day 5, was then up to Bandelier National Park for some afternoon shots of the ruins, then over to Craig's home in White Rock for the workshop party.

First, I would like to thank Craig & Cindy for the opportunity to work for the workshop/school. I had a great time, learned alot, and anticipate being able to continue working for both of them in the future. Second, I would like to thank all four students for making my first workshop so much fun, and helping me find my own way in teaching and answering their questions. It was a learning experience for us all.

New Mexico vacation & Workshop update

It's been a while since my last post. A lot has been going on......enough to keep me from updating this blog since last April. Many of you have enjoyed my new book published last month for the upcoming exhibit in September. I have sold quite a few of the limited edition of 25, along with a few prints from the book. Thank you all for the support.

Chris & I left for an 4 day extended weekend on July 10th to be a part of the Craig Varjabedian book opening in Albuquerque. It was well worth the long drive over & back. Lots of fun, great people, and a great exhibition at the Albuquerque Museum of Art & History. Check out the web site: http://www.cabq.gov/museum/

This last week (yes we made the trek back over again) Chris & I have been in Taos, New Mexico, just relaxing and enjoying the area. Above are a couple of images from the trip. The first was the afternoon of our first day on the trip, last Saturday in Winslow, Arizona. This is the original Hubbell Trading Post in Winslow, with a major storm brewing in the back ground. The second image is an old car in El Prado, New Mexico, just a few minutes north of Taos.

I will be assisting Craig Varjabedian throughout this next week. My excitement has been building for weeks to begin this adventure, and now the time has arrived. Also as a last note to everyone......Chris & I are celebrating our 34th wedding anniversary today. Amazing how time flies when you're having fun!!!

Varjabedian Workshop: Assistant Announcement

I am excited to announce that I will be assisting Craig Varjabedian in his July 26-August 1, 2009 workshop titled "The New Mexico Landscape". This will be a semi-private workshop with a limited enrollment of 5-6 participants, being co-sponsored by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum out of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Craig & his business partner, Cindy Lane, have been conducting photographic workshops for over 20 years. I am honored that they both thought enough of me personally and photographically to ask me to join then this summer. I am both anxious and nervous at this fantastic opportunity.

Johnson Canyon, Utah

My wife and I went on a search for an old movie set used for shooting the old Gunsmoke western TV show a few weeks back. We had heard it was east of Kanab, Utah, in Johnson Canyon. Amazingly, we drove right to it. Very easy to find. Anyone wanting directions, let me know. Unfortunately, its fenced off with many "Private Property-Keep Out" signs all around. Did get a few shots with the telephoto, but nothing worth posting as of yet. Will get some on here soon. What I did see were some of the most beautiful cloud patterns. This shot, looking south from the pull-out next to the movie set, really shows the great sky we had that day. The two lone poplar's (or also known as Cottonwood's by some dendrology challenged condominium builder's in Taos) add a nice draw of the eye. Hope you like the picture.

Placitas Church

Was looking through some of my older images from New Mexico this weekend, and found a few I had taken in Placitas. The area surrounding this church has such great energy and easiness. Also met the world's friendliest dog here.
The image's really didn't do much for me when I first took them a couple of years back. I was disappointed that the feelings I had there that day were not coming through in my final pictures. Working with them again this weekend, and using some new filtering, really brought out that feeling, and the great time I had there that day. This image is one I really fell in love with. Hope you do also.
